Wysong
Wysong is a different sort of a pet food company. Its feeding recommendations are a departure from the common practice, promoted by the pet food industry, of suggesting one single cat food formula, to meet all of the animal’s nutritional needs.
Wysong's approach
Wysong's approach is different, so different that I can’t say that I fully understand it yet, but what I have read makes sense, and I’m not rejecting any of it outright. My own cats are not eating a Wysong diet, except for their 95% meat canned products, which I provide them from time to time, as a change of pace.
I don’t know that I’ll become a devotee of Wysong’s nutritional process, if only because I’m not inclined to make radical changes in their diets at this point, at least not without a great deal of thought, but neither would I try to talk anyone out of it. Wysong is a reasonable approach, although I don’t know that it’s the only one, or even the best one.
Cats are carnivores. Other than a few bites here and there of plant materials, combined with that which might be found in the digestive tracts of their prey, cats are predisposed to eat meat. In the wild, their standard diet would consist of the whole bodies of whatever they could stalk and kill, and the meat would be raw and fresh.
Manufactured pet foods are a blend of meat and grain, fortified with vitamins and minerals; overall, perhaps a poor substitute for the real thing. The experts don't know everything there is to know about nutrition, and cannot reasonably claim that their particular brand of cat food contains one hundred percent of everything your cat may need.
However, it is neither practical or desirable to release our domesticated animals into the wild to eat their natural diet, so we're left to figure out what to feed them that would come as close to the natural pattern as possible, which would be primarily meat, fresh, varied, and raw.
That's a problem, since the most common types of processing heats, or otherwise alters the food from its natural, raw state.
Wysong doesn't pretend to solve all of our problems, but their products differ from those manufactured by other pet food companies in that they at least recognize their limitations, and don't attempt simply to meet arbitrary nutritional minimum percentages. Rather, Wysong tries to achieve optimal nutritional value by simulating the natural feline dietary process as much as possible, using as much fresh meat and organs in them as it is possible for them to mix into a dry product, and they produce a variety of products, including some, both dry and wet, that are one hundred percent meat.
Additionally, they don't recommend feeding your cat any one of their products alone, or even, necessarily restricting the cat's diet to their products, suggesting supplemental feeding of fresh, raw meats and organs.
Although most of Wysong's products are free, or relatively free, of corn, soy and wheat, they maintain that all three of these grains can be part of a healthy, balanced diet, as long as they are not used exclusively, and at least one of their products consists primarily of corn, soy and wheat.
Although I don't see where they make wide use of meat by-products, they argue that, where they do use such portions of the meat, it is not to save money, but to provide a more natural diet, considering that cats, in the wild, typically consume nearly every part of their prey.
While Wysong uses organic ingredients in its pet food, they point out that such claims are often little more than a marketing ploy.
Wysong is led by its founder, Dr. Wysong, a teacher, author, former veterinary surgeon, clinician, and scientist, with more than twenty-five years of experience in food and nutraceutical design and processing technology.
A look through Wysong's web site clearly illustrates that the company is at least as concerned with education as it is with marketing, so I'd rather you read through some of the many educational articles on their site, letting them make the arguments to your first-hand, rather than relying on me to summarize them accurately here.
After reviewing the claims of several pet food manufacturers, I have found only two that use cold processing, rather than heat processing, in the production of pet food. Blue Buffalo uses cold processing in the production of its LifeSource Bits, which is commendable, but if I understand it correctly, Wysong uses cold processing in the preparation of most, if not all, of its product.
Wysong is an interesting company, and its web site makes a lot of intriguing arguments. While I won't say that I'm a convert, or that I accept everything they have to say wholesale, neither could I say that I see anything wrong with their cat food, when fed in the manner suggested by the company.
Wysong is a good choice for your cat, although I don't know that it's the only choice.
In fact, I would have to say that it's an excellent product, and one that I'll be using more widely than I have been, although not exclusively. My cats will be eating Blue Spa Select as their primary staple, supplemented with raw meat and some of Wysong's products.

Wysong Archetype Buffet
|
Archetype Buffet is complete with nonheat-degraded meat, organs, bones, collagen, proteo-glycans (chondroitin, glucosamine), prebiotics and probiotics, and enhanced with phyto-nutrient, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. When mixed with water, dry Archetype Buffet becomes a stew-like food. Each bag dehydrates to the equivalent of eleven 5.5 oz. cans of food. The first four ingredients are beef and chicken, beef and chicken liver, ground bone, and flax seed. Available in 19.5 oz. bags, or as a case of 10.

Wysong Vitality
|
Wysong Vitality is a good starting point for adult cats, but Wysong recommends rotating it with other Wysong products and fresh foods. Vitality yields an excellent spectrum of amino acids and micronutrients essential to normal good health and vitality of the adult cat, and also assists in the maintenance of acide urine due to its high meat fraction and more natural mineral metabolism, which is less conducive to struvite formation. Available as a dry or canned product, the first four ingredients in the canned product are chicken, chicken liver, water sufficient for processing, and ground extruded whole soybeans. The first four ingredients in the dry product are chicken, chicken giblets, poultry fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols as a source of vitamin E), and ground wheat. 4 lb. bags (or a case of 4), or 5.5 oz. cans (case of 24).

Wysong Geriatrx
|
Wysong Geriatrx as a dry or wet product, and is considered a good starting point for older cats, and as a part of a rotation for any adult cat. Wysong Geriatrx is specifically designed to fulfill the nutritional needs of aging cats, who require fewer calories than more active adult cats. Lower density levels and higher food bulk help to reduce the glycemic index, and lower the body’s weight set point for older cats, which has been demonstrated to extend the life span of the pet. Geriatrx is also designed for use with degenerative disorders such as kidney, heart, and liver disease, which require lower levels of sodium, higher quality protein sources, and increased micronutrient density. The first four ingredients in the dry product are chicken, chicken giblets, poultry fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols as a source of Vitamin E), and ground brown rice. Available dry in a 4 lb. bag (or case of 4), and wet in a 5.5 oz. can (or case of 5).

|
